Caltrans scuttles bike lane on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge

Transportation planners unveiled a $55 million plan Wednesday to create bicycle and pedestrian access on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, but there's a problem: those who operate the bridge want no part of it.

The California Department of Transportation says it's too dangerous.

A committee for the Bay Area Toll Authority - which funds day-to-day operations of Bay Area bridges - heard plans Wednesday morning in Oakland to create a bicycle and pedestrian path by installing a movable barrier on the upper deck of the span.

During nonpeak commute hours, the barrier would be moved into place to create an 8-foot-wide lane for bicyclists and pedestrians. Presently there are three lanes on the span, but only two are used for traffic. The third is an auxiliary lane. The plan was the result of the third study on the access issue; the first was done 10 years ago.

SAG awards cast in a lead role

TV Guide's coverage starts at 4 p.m., with Rinna and Fatone joining at 6.

Rinna and Fatone were hired by TV Guide last April to be the faces of the network for red carpet events at major awards shows. The first for the duo was last September's Primetime Emmy Awards.

Rinna said she was sad the Globes were canceled, in part, because she wanted to feel the momentum of going from the Globes into the Oscars on the red carpet.

"I haven't seen Joey since the Emmys," she said. "That's what's so kind of strange about it. It's been four months. I'm looking forward to doing a few of these."

She'll be in New York next week for a Thursday appearance on "Live With Regis & Kelly," then she'll head back to Los Angeles for red carpet rehearsals.

"We have stand-ins come and pretend to be Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie.

Myth of BBC's 'made in Scotland'

We haven't got strong drama-producing companies in Scotland who are pitching strong ideas, so even if we said we'd love to have a returning drama series in Scotland, there's just not the company there to do that."Hamish Barbour, creative director of IWC Media, pointed to tax credit systems in Canada and Ireland as a way of boosting local broadcasting industries. He said such a system "would have a huge impact".Slimmed-down Gaelic service to cost £20mMORE than £20 million a year is to be spent on a new dedicated Gaelic broadcasting service that will be accessible to just 1.2 per cent of Scotland. The service, which was approved by the BBC Trust yesterday, will be launched in the summer to cater for the nation's Gaelic-speaking population of around 60,000.But the service, which will cost licence fee payers an additional £3.5 million a year, will be a slimmed-down version from what was envisaged.

McCarthy: We are moving forward

Mick McCarthy today hailed Wolves' battling draw at Blackpool as “progress" and insisted: “I'm not bothered where we are in the league until the end of April".

The Molineux chief was happy with a point from a hard-fought contest at Bloomfield Road even though results elsewhere meant his side slipped further from the play-off places.

McCarthy says he doesn't want that fact to cloud his side's first clean sheet since the win at Scunthorpe in January – and an improved display.

“Absolutely it's progress – we've been beaten twice in the last two games, so it is an improvement," he said.

“It's a clean sheet and we needed that after conceding the goals that we have done.

“There will be some arguing we should come here and win, but I don't subscribe to that because Blackpool are a decent side.

Pop culture in fine art's home

In 1998, the Guggenheim Museum in New York staged "The Art of the Motorcycle" and drew a record number of visitors. That was followed two years later by a tribute to Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, prompting some critics to proclaim it a thinly veiled advertisement for the designer's clothes.

Portraits by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz and Pop artist Andy Warhol were the most well visited exhibits at the Miami Art Museum in recent years. Even the staid Metropolitan Museum of Art has capitalized on fashion and celebrity to boost attendance. In 2001, the New York museum showcased clothes and jewelry worn by first lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Both Lippman and Delson see the Princess Di extravaganza, with its emphasis on fashion, as similar to the Jackie-O show.

But is it real?

Purists in the art world dismiss some of these recent blockbusters as crassly commercial, compromising museum integrity for cash.

Interbike, CamelBak, Zipp & more

The 2009 Interbike show may be the last one held in Las Vegas, Nevada for a while as a replacement venue was discussed as part of a breakfast meeting during the Bicycle Leadership Conference (BLC) held last month. The current long term contract with North America's largest bicycle trade show and the hosting Sands Expo and Convention Centre is set to expire after the 2009 event.

The relocation of Interbike has been a hotly debated subject over the past few years as its current setting has proven to be fairly contentious among the show's participants. Even so, the size and scope of the show greatly limit the list of potential candidates and force practical realities to overshadow emotion. Interbike's Industry Consultant, Lance Camisasca, outlined host city requirements as the following:

Contiguous exhibit space of at least 65,000 square metres (700,000 gross square feet)
A large and diverse selection of hotels, restaurants and entertainment options conveniently located to the events
An international airport located within close proximity to the event
An outdoor demo site with great weather, extensive cross country/downhill trails and a closed road loop, and
An event market that is recognized as a cycling culture destination.

Keep it simple on Egg Harbor Rd.

Business owners on Egg Harbor Road want to see the city of Sturgeon Bay keep any reconstruction of the high traffic road as simple as possible.

The city sent a letter out to Egg Harbor Road business and property owners Jan. 31 informing them of a public meeting scheduled for Feb. 5.

On the docket were staff recommended road surface improvements and a two way left turn lane in the center of the road for the 3,000 foot stretch between the Georgia Street/8th Avenue intersection and the 14th Avenue intersection.

Estimated project cost for reconstructing the road surface and creating the TWLTL was $575,000.

In addition to discussing options for improving the road surface were such infrastructure options as constructing pedestrian walkways, bicycle paths/lanes, traffic flow improvement and storm water management.

State VS Ryan Frederick-no this young man does not deserve the death penalty. I question if he should even be prosecuted. I am truly sorry for the officers family. I think it is because he killed an officer that he is being treated so harshly. Noone will ever know if this was an intentional murder or if Mr. Frederick was only trying to protect himself and his property. The fact that he has no criminal record should be considered. I would like the prosecutor to ask himself, "If this man had shot an intruder intending to enter his house illegally would I be charging him man?" It is very apparent that the police department made many mistakes that night. Why should this young man be punished for the rest of his life. Bridget, Gates NC

-I believe that the police didn't ID themselvees as usual and that Ryan Frederick was protecting his home against intruders, and HE should be released at once.
