Dublin police to ride three-wheeled scooter

DUBLIN — Police will soon be patrolling the city's busiest shopping center on a three-wheeled, clean-energy scooter.

The T3 scooter, which has a top speed of 25 mph, looks like a beefier version of a Segway. It runs on batteries that need recharging every 30 miles.

The police department now uses patrol cars and bicycles to navigate the shopping center on Hacienda Drive and Dublin Boulevard. The scooter, which was donated by center businesses, will give officers a good option, said Dublin police Lt. Glenn Moon.

Patrol cars have more visibility, a good deterrent to bad behavior, but they are harder to use in crowded areas, Moon said, while bikes can be used when officers don't necessarily want to be seen. The motorized scooter is the best of both worlds, he said.

"It has the (visible) deterrent of a patrol car, but somewhat of the stealth" of a bike, Moon said.

Past ‘moneymaking’ seems to have come at high cost

There were similar Arab attacks in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Then Israel entered into peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan, offered peace to the Syrians and Palestinians, withdrew from Lebanon, and pulled out of Gaza. There have been no "holy wars" or "wars for conquest."

At present, Israel and Fatah, with support from Middle Eastern countries and the international community, are trying to establish the terms for peace and security for all. This effort deserves our whole-hearted support.

The State Journal-Register headline had it just about right: People ought to look fairly at all sides of the issue, then support the search for peace.

Oil crisis ahead? 'Peakniks' build for future

If the day comes that oil grows so scarce that Austinites can't afford fruit hauled in from California and brownouts roll across Texas, Lester Germanio will live high, wide and cool in his West Lake Hills villa.

Germanio and other Austinites who have banded together to trade information and survival tips are preparing themselves for what they see as inevitable deprivations as oil production declines past its peak. Some call them "Peakniks."

Porsche challenges smog tax charge

LONDON Mayor Ken Livingstone will contest luxury car maker Porsche's threatened legal challenge over his plan to tax gas guzzling cars driving in the city centre.

In launching its proposed challenge last week, Porsche said the $A53 daily charge was unfair, would not cut emissions of carbon dioxide and would deter businesses from moving to the city.

"Porsche's claim - that it is illegal for the Mayor to introduce this policy - is wrong," a mayoral spokeswoman said after Livingstone received a letter from Porsche setting out its proposed legal challenge.

"The Greater London Authority Act 1999 gives the Mayor the power to do this.

"Porsche has a vested interest in seeking to prevent London government from exercising its powers to improve the environment.
