SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - The ballot in Tuesday's special election for the state Senate's 48th District carries the names of Democrat Darrel Aubertine and Republican Will Barclay but the race is just as much a face-off between Gov. Eliot Spitzer and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno. Aubertine is a dairy farmer from Cape Vincent, first elected to the 118th Assembly in 2002. Barclay was elected the same year in the adjacent 124th Assembly district. His father, H. Douglas Barclay, served in the New York Senate from 1965 to 1984. In a race that grew nasty, the two men sought to replace Republican Sen. Jim Wright, who retired in January after 15 years to take a consulting job.

Seven confirmed dead after bus plunges into river in NW China

URUMQI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a bus accident in northwest China rose to seven on Tuesday after divers retrieved the last body from a river into which the bus plunged.

Divers recovered the last body at midday on Tuesday from the 10-meter deep, Nangan irrigation channel in Alaer City, in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The bus, with 19 people on board including the driver, veered off the road and into the river at 3:40 p.m. on Thursday due to a steering wheel malfunction. Twelve managed to escape.

Three bodies were found in the 40-seat bus which was lifted out of water six hours after the accident. Two bodies were retrieved Friday and one was found on Monday in the river.

With petrol at $2 a litre, life's tough for motorists

But from April, it jumped thrice to reach $1.840 in July. It climbed to $2.030 last week.

This surge in petrol prices brought on by rising crude oil prices - which reached a record of US$98.62 (S$143.11) per barrel last week - has forced some motorists to re-think the way they use their cars.

Of the 30 motorists with whom The Sunday Times spoke, more than half said they avoid making unnecessary car trips.

Ms Huang Li Min, 29, a tutor, said that, instead of driving, she now takes a 10-minute walk to the provision shop near her Ang Mo Kio flat.

Sales executive Alan Ang spends 10 minutes every morning planning his route before leaving his house in Toa Payoh. He makes at least four trips a day to see his clients.

The 31-year-old, who reckons he saves $20 monthly by planning his journeys, said: 'I'll try and schedule all the meetings in one area around the same time.

Security shambles as airport is invaded for third night in row

If you want to see how it is done properly, go and look at Narita Airport in Japan: watchtowers, searchlights, multiple fences, solid walls, sterile areas and lots of barbed wire. Those are only the obvious signs. I'm sure there is much else we can't see.

Viewer Comments On Snowmobiling Safety

I think that the same laws for drunk driving in a registered vehicle for road use should be the same for a snowmobile/ATV's/Jet skis, any of the "toys". I feel that ANYTHING operated by a motor, one of the above mentioned or even a ride on lawn mower, should have the same regulations as the vehicles used on the road ways(have you seen "cops"?). For goodness sake, you can be fined and ticketed for operating a boat impaired. Why? Is it just because it needs to be registered and licensed with the state like road use vehicles. Well if that's the case, then any motor driven "vehicle" should have the same regulations. It should be regulatory, as with motorcycles, to wear helmets on snowmobiles. Even though having one alcoholic drink doesn't put most people over the legal limit, it does impair you.

Sound off

I was proud to read on your website that Egypt Today's policy prohibits the publication of material that is libelous or insensitive towards religious, ethnic and other minorities. The European media, and the Danish newspaper in question, can certainly learn a few lessons from et about responsible freedom of expression in the press.

DK-2, A Danish organization for democracy and the media, has for many months criticized Jyllands-Posten for having published the cartoons about the Prophet Mohammed [PBUH]. However, the newspaper has rejected our letters to the editors and those from many other readers.

We firmly believe that this is absolutely not an issue of freedom of expression; it is rather an intended offense against a whole group of people. The fact that the Danish people and the whole of Denmark have to pay the costs of this offense is highly grotesque and deeply unfair both to the Muslims and to the Danes.

Democrats eyeing record turnout

And based on absentee voting to date, the Democrats could obliterate that record and even rival last week's GOP turnout of 444,090.

As of Thursday the state had issued 53,936 absentee ballots — 32,164 for Democrats and 21,772 for the GOP primary Jan. 19 — according to figures from the State Election Commission.

That means the Democratic absentee turnout is on track to approach 50 percent higher than the Republican absentee turnout. Absentee voting will continue through 5 p.m. today in the Democratic primary.

Charleston County Democratic Party Chairman Waring Howe called the absentee numbers "tremendous" and said they bode well for an eyebrow-raising turnout on Saturday.

well for an eyebrow-raising turnout on Saturday.

"We're looking forward to a record turnout that will equal or exceed the Republicans on Jan.

Hoffman Will Propose Bill To Shield Counties From RAGBRAI Liability

As the Legislature gets to work, in Des Moines, RAGBRAI officials, county supervisors and bike riders will be watching to see if legislation emerges that could help shape the future of Iowa's great bicycle ride. One western Iowa lawmaker says he'll propose a bill that would provide "immunity" for counties where riders roll. "I think its important we get this immunity for counties," said Rep. Clarence Hoffman, (R) Charter Oak. Hoffman represents the corner of Crawford County where Kirk Ullrich died almost four years ago. He lost control of his bike after it hit a crack in a county road. His widow sued. And, last fall, she settled with Crawford County for $355,000 dollars. County supervisors then passed a resolution banning the annual bicycle ride from its roads. "If we have to fix our roads, and get them into the shape, so that they're gonna be good for bicycles in every situation, then the money for "Time 21" needs to be doubled," Hoffman said.
