Before RAGBRAI there was the Fort Madison Cycling Club

Dun Auge is a serious bicyclist. He participates in most of the organized rides anywhere within 25 or 30 miles of Fort Madison and in between he can usually be seen pedaling around town solo or with friends.Recently Don loaded his bicycle in the back of his pickup truck and traveled to central Missouri to tour a good part of the Katy Trail State Park, one of the premier bicycling spots in the country. This park is only a few dozen feet wide, but follows the abandoned right-of-way of M-K-T railroad for 225 miles across scenic Missouri.Don did not realize it, but going to Missouri to bicycle he was following a program first established here back in the late 19th century by the 100 members or so of the old Fort Madison Cycling Club.Anyone who owned a "wheel" - as bicycles were called in those days - was considered a person of distinction, for at that time even an ordinary bicycle like the Crescent cost a whopping $45.

Obama seen as more likely to beat McCain

As far as Obama dressing in traditional Muslim garb, I don't think Americans need to fear that he is not just as pro-Israel as Bush or any of the previous American presidents. Should Hillary Clintons campaign be responsible for distributing the, 'photo,' Obama could hit back with a photo of Bill Clinton wearing a yarmulke.

Speed camera IS working

Seemingly however, every time someone gets knocked down it always seems to be attributed to the driver. Whatever happened to the green cross code bloke and the other public information films that used to be on the telly when I was younger. With roads busier than ever, wouldn't you have thought they would be even more necessary. As for our country roads, they could be made considerably safer at night if the county fixed the one invention that helped the driver see better the road ahead, the 'cat's eyes. Simple fact is that hardly any of them now work because they are mostly broken and you can't always use main beam can you. If the county wants to improve the A449 and other country roads then the investment in fixing the cat's eyes would have been more beneficial than a so called safety camera.

OC Council in huff over grant center

The panel winds up giving the project less money for a shorter time than requested.

Oil City Council got its collective dander up about a proposed grant resource center pegged for the Franklin Library at a work session Monday and voted to provide less money for a shorter time than what the center organizers had envisioned.

"My concern was that Oil City was not brought in at the very beginning and we were informed pretty much after everything was decided," sniffed Mayor Sonja Hawkins.

Her comments related to a request for $2,000 each year for five years to help fund the newly established Venango County Grant Resource Center.

The group, which will be headquartered at the Franklin Library, aims to assist non-profit agencies and municipalities in applying for federal, state and charitable trust monies.

Denise, Tommy to make mas in Rio Claro

SOCA STAR Denise Saucy Wow Belfon and comedian Tommy Joseph are among the stars who will be in action in Rio Claro on January 26. They will join chutney artistes Rick Ramoutar, Nirmal Massive Gosine and Raytee Ramroop for the areas biggest Carnival fete at the Triangle Amphitheatre, on Tabaquite Road, Rio Claro. Music will be provided by Brantec Rhythm International led by Robert Ramroop.

Having had a bumper year in 2007 with her bicycle wine, Belfon is back with a bang this year doing Rude Gyal Anthem - Bluetooth Riddhim. In this song she is introducing a soca dance that can go with any ring tone.

She told Newsday she is looking forward to her Rio Claro gig: The people are hungry for a little Carnival action and I am happy to give my best performance to them.

Belfon is one of this countrys most sought after artistes and is known for her high energy, complex, exotic and highly controversial on-stage performances.
