Power crisis hits industry hard

The Punjab State Electricity Boards (PSEB) decision to shut down induction furnace units in the state to tackle the ongoing power crisis has shocked almost 10,000 units in the engineering, cycle parts manufacturing and furnace industry.

Furthermore, the electricity board has increased industrial cuts to more than eight hours every day, a measure that industry says would cripple it.

The decision has a direct bearing on over 30,000 workers in the 150 induction furnace units in the state and at least 25 per cent of the workforce in other industries. Besides, industry like cycle and cycle parts manufacturers, auto ancillary units and other engineering goods manufacturing units, which get their raw material supply from induction furnace units, will be directly hit.

Industrialists say it has become difficult for them to retain workforce as their work has drastically come down and workers want to shift to other states.

Coke's health kick over hydration won't hold water

Coca-Cola recently teamed with the on-demand cable fitness network ExerciseTV, an unusual partnership that promises to solve what apparently is America's latest health crisis: dehydration.

Say you're getting sweaty during an abs workout. Before you can reach for some tap water, an image of Coke's Enviga product pops up on the screen. When the carbonated green tea is poured, messages about hydration, burning calories or Coke brands spill out.

These handy reminders, said fitness icon and ExerciseTV founder Jake Steinfeld, are just one way the world's No. 1 soft-drink company can bring more "educational information" to his network's 23 million viewers.

To say that Coke wants to give us good "information" about fitness is to believe that Virginia Slims wanted to improve women's tennis.

The Friday interview

Beijing last spring I watched landscaping teams watering already well-established trees on the approaches to the "Bird's Nest" stadium. Given that beautification is the last thing on any construction timetable, landscaping is a good indicator of a project's past.

Higgins, who oversees a team of 500 in Canary Wharf and a construction staff that will exceed 4,000 people, is determined London's experience will be closer to the Chinese example than the Greek. He is convinced that decisions now will have a fundamental impact on the cost and delivery.

"There has been a huge debate about cost, but cost is always an outcome," he says. "Much of it becomes inevitable from decisions you make early on in a project. Hitting the milestones on planning, on cost-planning, start date on site, those are the biggest ways of 'de-risking' the project.
