| Now, saline water worries flood-hit Malwa farmers
After suffering heavy losses due to water logging this kharif season, farmers of the Malwa region are a worried lot with their fields still inundated and the wheat-sowing season already in the offing. With over 50 per cent of their paddy and cotton crops totally perished, the land tillers in villages of Bahmanwala, Takhtmalana, Jhabelwali, Chadhewan, Thandewala, Widing, Udaikaran, Chauntara, Bajja, Vattoo, Haraj, Sarainaga and Jammuana helplessly watched the migratory birds in their flooded or marshy fields. They are looking for remedies to get rid of the menace of sem (saline water logging in fields). As one walks over these sem-affected fields, the feet sink in the earth as if the water below is waiting to come up. The sem has blackened the top layer of soil. A farmer will have to plough such a piece of land at least four times to make it fit for cultivation.
Still 'Free To Be ...'
The only girly-girl on the whole album, a squeaky-voiced creature known as Tender Sweet Young Thing meets a grisly end as she is torn limb from limb by a pack of hungry tigers. These were big ideas back in 1974, heady stuff for a girl of a certain bent — a quick, athletic "tomboy" with a yen for bucking the system. My parents, by no means liberal, supported this ideology. Parenting daughters made an unlikely feminist of my father, while my mother in many ways was already there. "Keep your options open," they always told me. "You can have it all." I glance into the back seat of the car at my own kids, transfixed as I once was by the songs and stories on the album. Odd that all these years later its message still feels innovative. Nell, raised to the best of my ability without gender stereotypes, still finds it silly that William wants a doll.
Council nixes zone change
LAFAYETTE — The City-Parish Council voted down a zoning change 7-2 Tuesday that would have allowed Mello Joy Coffee to build a new corporate headquarters, distribution facility and coffee roasting plant on Moss Street. Also Tuesday, as part of Black History Month, the council recognized the first black elected officials in Lafayette Parish. Mello Joy Coffee was seeking to rezone the property from general business to light industrial so that the coffee roasting plant would be allowed. The property is just south of Interstate 10, with Schilling Distribution on one side and a neighborhood on the other. A private school’s property line is about 300 feet away. The presence of that neighborhood is what many councilmen said drove their decision not to allow the zoning change.
Parking deck planned for Chastain Park
The Atlanta City Council's community development/human resources committee on Tuesday unanimously approved a master plan for the city's largest park and one of the region's most popular concert venues. About 1 million users visit Chastain each year, park management officials say. The plan will likely go before the entire City Council on Monday for a vote. The deck —likely three levels— would be located next to the park gymnasium, about a quarter-mile south of the ampitheater. Chastain Park Conservancy leaders said the proposed deck would be covered by trees, which they say has allayed some concerns when the plan was presented to each of the city's 26 neighborhood planning units in recent months. "Some wondered why [build a deck] and others said 'Have you been there?' " said Mark Root, the conservancy's executive director.
Thriving in music in Westwood
Our intent was not to do a full shop," said Stetson, who owns the business and the historic Westwood building that houses it. But news travels fast in the world of bass musicians - a smaller group than the more visible violin or cello players - and the pair's workload ballooned. .
Has reaction to the Archbishop's Sharia law comments been Islamophobic ...
I think the whole reaction is so really stupid. I am convinced that the archbishop is a thoughtful man however, if he is so thoughtful, could he not guess that his remarks would be misconstrued and that the same bad images of Islam and so-called Islamic law being implemented wherever ( real Islamic law is implemented NOWHERE at all and I know what I am talking about) would just come up AGAIN and AGAIN? I dont know but if even somebody like me could figure this out , he could have too, and therefore I am pondering about the significance and relevance of this declaration. If you are fighting prejudice, you try and do it in a clever way, not like that...To me this has only achieved one thing: reinforce the idea in the English commoner that all what Muslims are after is changing their country's law, habits etc.
