SMART ALEX A MEDAL HUNTER

The newest sport at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City next week should carry a health warning.

Something like: Sliding down a bosleigh run on a tea tray can be hazardous.

But it may be very useful for Britain's traditionally feeble medal count.

The Skeleton offers a serious golden opportunity.

The name derives from the outline of the sledge on which the "sliders" hurtle down the snowy mountains of the world.

Head first. The name might also describe how some of the athletes finish the race.

"Yes, it does look dangerous," admits Britain's gold medal candidate, Alex Coomber, a 27-year-old RAF intelligence officer from Worthing.

"But in reality you can't actually crash out of the track, so it's really a matter of ice burns and bruising when you come off.

Couric Praises Media for Predicting Recession

In a cyclical economy recession is a given every now and then, and media predictions will occasionally be right. But that doesn't make those media claims reliable barometers of state of the economy.

Couric also failed to mention the media's role in creating a recession. How does she expect the American public to react when all the media talks about is recession? Practically every night, viewers are bombarded with negative coverage of the economy. Does she expect that will encourage people to spend money?

No, the media's constant doom-and-gloom reporting scares people. If consumers fear an oncoming recession, they'll want to save their money - Couric even suggests in her notebook video that viewers "build a cash cushion and prepare to sit tight."

SensAble Technologies Eases the Transition to Digital Dentistry With ...

The SensAble Dental Lab System eases the transition to digital dentistry, because it enables lab technicians to leverage the skills, processes and know-how they've spent decades perfecting.

For lab owners, the system delivers the ability to create partial frameworks -- typically a lower margin, more complex dental prosthetic -- in addition to the more common crown and bridge substructures, using a cost-effective, digital process.

Because the SensAble Dental Lab System is easy to learn and addresses multiple types of restorations, it allows labs of all sizes and levels of computer 'savvy' to enter the digital domain. Labs can produce more digital restorations in less time, while maintaining consistent quality and delivering fast turnaround to the dentists they serve.

Should officers use tasers?

They are Wade Erickson, trooper since October 1999; Jon Froemke, trooper since December 2007; Brian Helget, trooper since December 2007; Tim Koehler, trooper since May 2000, and Troy McCormack, trooper since June 1994.

Prior to receiving a Taser, troopers must complete a two-day training course, and they must complete a one-day recertification course annually. Trooper training standards exceed the manufacturers recommendations.

A patrol spokesman would not describe what kind of "uncooperative" behavior was involved.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation.

"This is a traumatic event for a lot of people," superintendent Tim O'Malley said. "Someone has died and in fairness to that person, the troopers, family members and others who may have been affected, we need to make sure that we're accurate and thorough."

The man who died was identified as Mark C.

Friday Legends — Rodney Cress

China Grove Junior High track coach Harry Bame stared at his stopwatch one spring afternoon in 1963.

The watch was still functioning, but his brain couldn't process what his eyes were telling him.

Ninth-grader Rodney Cress had just run 100 yards in 10-flat, something Bame had never witnessed in a junior high track meet.

The world's fastest human, Bullet Bob Hayes, lowered the mark for the 100 to 9.1 seconds in 1963, but here was a ninth-grader from Rowan Mills with zero track training, with no clue how to get out of the blocks, running 10-flat.

"I'd always run or rode a bicycle everywhere I went, and I guess all that pumping my legs made me fast," Cress said. "I always was faster than the other kids, but I had no idea how fast I was until the day Coach timed me.
