Raising the bar

Freije smiles as if he is going to get told off for what comes next. 'When I was head of the boxing club, we'd try to get the team to be healthy - for example, trying to get people to make juices. But for explosive sports, just before they kick off you'll find boxers doing mental things, trying to get as much carbohydrate in the system as they can.' Like what? 'Family bars of Dairy Milk. Whole packets of fruit pastilles.'

Boxing is not the only sport to have some unorthodox solutions to energy shortages. One of Britain's most successful professional surfers, Robyn Davies, is a lifetime vegetarian, but some of her fellow surfers are not so fussy. 'Surfers eat anything near at hand if it's going to give them energy to get back in the waves. A friend of mine was so desperate not to get out of the surf that she scrambled up the rocks, smashed off a couple of limpets, sucked out their insides, then paddled back out for another three-hour session.

Chronicle's Goodfellows raises record amount

The Houston Chronicle's Goodfellows program had a record year in 2007, raising more than $1.19 million from 5,066 donors.

The 2007 season collected $1,190,619.40, an increase of more than $165,000 from the 2006 season. In that year, the program which provides holiday toys to Houston-area families, collected $1,024,245.73.

The funds were anchored by several significant donations $200,000 each from Les Alexander and the Rockets' Clutch City Foundation and John Eddie and Sheridan Williams, and $60,000 from the Fred and Mabel R. Parks Foundation.

But the bulk of the donations came from smaller checks, many ranging from $5 to $25.

"Our legacy program, Goodfellows, 95 years strong, continues to serve a growing base of needy Houston families," said Chronicle Publisher Jack Sweeney.

K.J. gets overlooked, but shouldn't | Braves

Love the way he plays, the effort he gives, and he's a class act, too. A couple of years ago, he was signing a ball for me before a game, and my pen died on the "J" and he asked around for another pen so he could finish signing. I can see a lot of guys giving up and moving on to the next autograph, but KJ waited and did it right.

Speaking of classy, thanks to Chip for stopping by to blog with the fans…heckuva nice thing to do. I really appreciate the way guys like Chipper and Smoltz go out of their way to help the club (via contract adjustments) and interact with the fans.

Counting the days to the start of the season…have a great one, all…

Our opinion: A very little goes a long way

At this very minute, little children are wearing T-shirts claiming that the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl.

The shirts celebrate a perfect 19-0 season that came oh-so close to fruition.

It's not a case of presumption or wishful thinking.

“It will be a parallel universe, where the Patriots had a perfect season," Karen Kartes, a spokeswoman for a charity that delivered the items, told the New York Post.

The children aren't mistaken in their proclamation, either.

The children live in Nicaragua and, chances are, couldn't care less about professional football.

And perhaps they're unaware of the inaccuracy. The shirts, even with an incorrect message, are a welcome gift to someone who might otherwise go without.

Through World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization, hundreds of T-shirts and caps incorrectly announcing the Patriots as Super Bowl champs landed in the hands of poor Nicaraguan children.

Why The Right Loves a Disaster

I see 100s of thousands of cluster munitions planted in Southern Lebanese farmlands. And most importantly, I see a new flux of US reconstruction dollars flooding Lebanon. Is this the example of “true" American influence. France's new leader seems to think it is good.

One dog had numerous cuts and what appeared to be an eye infection, while another, with tightly cropped ears, had scars both new and old on its face.

An animal control officer at the scene said the dogs will be killed by the end of the day.
