A new nuclear age

Its return on investment may not look favourable now, but when the price of electricity doubles, triples, or quadruples, that makes the solar rooftop look a lot better.AND...conserve energy now.

I note you say the new nuclear technology has a much lower risk for disaster Is that not in itself an admission that nuclear technology is unsafe?

I note that you are using an electrical device containing components made of plastics, arsenic, cadmium, bromine, chromium, lead and mercury to make your posts. Given that thousands of people per year are electrocuted or poisoned by said chemicals are you not engaging in unsafe activities?

And your point is?Electrical devices kill people because the user usually mistreat them or fails to maintain them adequately People also have a choice in that knowing that there is very small chance it might kill them, whether they want to use such devices.

Murray v Wawrinka as it happened

So it's 3-3 and only two games have been won on serve. Who'd a thunk it?

"Some very passive rallies from both players, perhaps trying to size each other up. Stan has a better serve but andy a much better return, all makes for an entertaining match. Ps Wawrinka has a piggy nose." Seb on text 81111

Murray 3-2 WawrinkaWawrinka's forehand has been a little Jekyll and Hyde this afternoon, some have been dealt with more power than a Floyd Mayweather uppercut, while others have been more misdirected than a Steve Harmison loosener. But he is slowly beginning to find some sort of rhythm and he wins his first game on serve without too many issues.

Murray 3-1 WawrinkaAbsolutely brilliant from Murray, mixing up volleys, drop shots and lobs in a 37-stroke rally at 30-15, but follows the sublime with the not very good with his first double fault of the match.

KING EYES MORE GLORY

We believed we were the better team.

"I wanted to be one of those captains that led a team up those steps to lift a trophy, but I don't want to stop there - I want to lead the club onto more success. I'm not happy leaving it at one trophy.

"When you go far in competitions, you see yourself as in with a chance of winning finals and you want to win as many as you can.

"The UEFA Cup is another chance to win something, but we'll be taking it one game at a time."

Rise of the Ron Paul Republicans

We grown-ups understand that there is more at stake here, and we choose to vote for what we think is right, not vote for who we think other people will vote for. Thanks, NC Times, for the article.

Bryan Z. wrote on Jan 27, 2008 11:02 AM:Ron Paul's plan seems to be the only logical way to go about government programs that people depend on. With true change in foreign policy and true fiscal reform (face it, the other candidates are just tinkering), we can support those who are dependent on the government and also give everyone else a way to get out and choose from private options.

Thankful for coverage wrote on Jan 27, 2008 11:06 AM:Thank you for finally running an excellent article about the only hope for "we the people" - RON PAUL!!!

Michael Bauer: Between Meals

When Ed Levine interviewed me for his book "Pizza: A Slice of Heaven," I listed as one of my favorites the arugula and prosciutto pizza from Firewood Cafe. This decade-old restaurant has three locations in San Francisco: in the Castro, in the food court at the Metreon, and at SFO. I've been to all of them but rarely venture beyond that pizza and one of the salads, which are consistently good.

In the Castro, the original location, the feeling is upscale. Large windows overlook 18th Street, and each table is set with a complimentary bowl of olives. Diners line up in front of the wood-fired oven to order, and the food is brought to the table.

Size: 10 inches ($8.50-$9.50).

Style: Thin crust.

Oven: Firewood oven that bakes the pie for 650 degrees for about 5 minutes.

How towns are redesigned as gyms

Stairs for cardio training. Wider footpaths instead of treadmills. To fight obesity, the towns we live in are being redesigned so we exercise without noticing.

Our forebears didn't need advice to exercise for 20 minutes a day, five times a week. Physical activity was part of everyday life - walking to work, wringing mangles and promenading in the park on Sundays.

Classic bikes: Yamaha FS1E

Normal members of the human race could be forgiven for thinking that lawmakers are an alien species intent on making our lives a misery. In the golden days of motorcycling you simply saddled up and rode away into the sunset without any licence. Then a proficiency test was brought in, but the neophyte rider still learned on the bike of his choice. This was too good to last and so a 250cc limit was introduced, allegedly to keep learners safe on dull, porcine, British plodders.

Design team taps WKU student

A college senior from Western Kentucky has been selected to work on a global design project to create a wind-powered water purifier to benefit impoverished areas that lack electricity.

Zach Pearl, who is studying mechanical engineering at Western Kentucky University, is part of the five-member team contributing to the project from around the world.

"Something like this could possibly be used where there isn't a safe source of drinking water," Pearl said. "This could save lives."

The research is still in early stages, he said, but the group is using computer-generated conceptual drawings to examine the possibility of harnessing wind power.

It's not Pearl's first attempt to design a water purification system. Last year he was part of a team that created a water purification system powered by pedals on a bicycle.
